Most symptoms of heartburn consist of the following, a burning feeling in your chest, a burning throat sensation, having a hard time swallowing, nauseous, and some may even result in a continuing cough. What causes heartburn is generally by the esophagus being irritated by acid. More commonly known as heartburn or acid reflux.
The esophagus is a muscle that opens and closes to let food enter the stomach, foods with a high acidity will irritate the esophagus and will irritate the LES to make it open up allowing acid to come through. Heartburn really has nothing to do with the heart.
Some of the acidic foods that allow the esophagus to open and cause heartburn are things such as tomatoes, orange juice, grapefruit (grapefruit juice) and anything that is high in acid.
What causes heartburn and who does it affect?
10% of Americans suffer from this un-comfortable feeling on a daily basis, while half of pregnant women suffer from it. The main cause of heartburn is an underactive LES (lower esophageal sphincter) that allows acid to come back up through the esophagus more than wanted. It is also cause from pregnancy, eating and obesity or too much pressure on the stomach muscles. Stress is a very big cause of heartburn because the stress makes your stomach make more stomach acid which will make you have more heartburn or acid reflux.
Can medications help what causes heartburn?
There are a number of medications that can be purchased over the counter at drug stores for heartburn or you can consider an alternative decision by investing into surgery. You can also go to your doctor and tell him or her that you think you are experiencing what heartburn feels like and you are looking for a medication to ease or relieve this pain. There are many Americans that feel the burning sensation of what causes heartburn which is mainly caused by over eating and stress.
